The 4-Step “PASS” Method to Using a Fire Extinguisher Correctly
Having a fire extinguisher nearby is only helpful if your team knows how to use it. In an emergency, panic can cause people to forget the basics.
Train your employees on the simple P.A.S.S. acronym to ensure they can confidently handle a fire extinguisher when it matters most:
- P – Pull the pin: Pull the pin located at the top of the extinguisher. This breaks the tamper seal and unlocks the operating lever.
- A – Aim low: Point the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not at the flames. To put the fire out, you must extinguish the fuel source.
- S – Squeeze the lever: Squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguishing agent. Releasing the lever will stop the flow, so maintain a firm grip.
- S – Sweep from side to side: Moving carefully, sweep the nozzle back and forth across the base of the fire until it appears completely out. Watch the area closely in case it re-ignites.
Safety Warning: Only attempt to fight a fire if it is small (the size of a wastebasket), the room is clear of heavy smoke, and you have a clear, unblocked escape route behind you. If the fire spreads, evacuate immediately and call emergency services.
